TomTom Runner and Multi-Sport GPS sports watches unveiled

Satnav maven claims to have “re-designed” the sporty watch with ultra-simple one-button control and huge screen

TomTom today launched the Runner and Multi-Sport, two GPS-toting sports watches that it claims revolutionise the world of sports watches. Try not to get too excited over there, sports watch wearers!

The watches feature large, high resolution and high contrast displays, but the key behind their superiority to existing sports watches like the Motorola MotoActv could be the one-button control, which lets you scroll and select using, well, one button. It’s designed for use while moving and to be easily pressed even when you’re wearing gloves.

Being a sports watch, it comes with Graphical Training Partner, which offers real-time performance updates and three modes: Race (race against a personal best or your most recent run); Goal (set a distance, time or calorie goal and watch your progress towards reaching it); and Zone (set a target for pace or heart rate and track your progress via an on-screen graph).

What else? Well, both the Runner and Multi-Sport feature a skinny 11.5mm design, scratch and impact-resistant screen, water-resistant body, pedometer to track indoor running, Bluetooth to connect to external sensors (like the optional heart rate monitor) and the ability to send stats to a multitude of apps and sites including MapMyFitness, RunKeeper, MyFitnessPal and TomTom’s own MySports site.

The Multi-Sport and Runner are broadly similar, but the former has a bunch of extra features including a bike mount, cadence sensor, altimeter and swimming motion sensor.

Both models will be out this summer, with prices yet to be confirmed.
