The Polestar 1 is a hybrid car you should get excited about

Volvo's in-house performance brand goes its own way, with style

It might have more in common with an American muscle car from the outside, but underneath the carbon fibre body, the Polestar 1 is as 21st century as it gets. Twin electric motors and a third petrol engine deliver a whopping 600 horsepower – eat your heart out, Mustang. Volvo’s once in-house performance marque is going it alone with this performance coupe, which has some green credentials too. You’ll be able to drive it in electric-only mode for almost 100 miles, putting it on par with some pure electric city cars. Expect the usual Volvo attention to detail inside, too, with luxurious fixtures and fittings, plus a very competent infotainment system. It’ll arrive in 2019, but you won’t be putting down a deposit for one: it’ll be available on a subscription, with Volvo collecting the car for services throughout the three-year loan. No need to wait in, either – the engineers can unlock and start the car with their smartphones.
