Apple is working on a gaming controller for the iPad and iPhone

The future looks bright for iGamers if rumours of a dedicated iGamepad are to be believed

Apple could be working on an iGamepad to provide an improved gaming experience for iPhone and iPad owners, according to AnandTech‘s Anand Lal Shimpi who reportedly knows of an internal Apple project to bring a physical controller to the market.

Shimpi is unsure as to to whether or not an iGamepad will ever see the light of day, but it would definitely be a solution to the limited uses of touchscreen controls. We agree that Apple needs to up its game by adding physical controls, but find it hard to imagine anyone carrying a supplementary controller alongside their iPhone or iPad. Even the tiny iCade 8-Bitty, which only works on a handful of titles, is an effort to carry for a train ride on a night out.

Nevertheless, with Android devices already able to use PS3 controllers for gaming, Apple looks to be playing catch-up with Android once again. Yes, pull-down notifications, we’re talking about you.

An iGamepad combined with the quad-core graphics grunt and Retina Display of the new iPad (reviewed here) is enough to get our gaming juices flowing, so here’s to hoping that this particular rumour, which was picked up by Recombu, sees the light of day.
