Archos unveils three Android smartphones

Better known for media players and tablets, the French firm is branching out into phones

Archos today announced that it’ll be bringing a trio of Android smartphones to Europe by the end of May.

The French company is best known for portable media players and tablets, and this marks its first foray into phones. The three models will each feature dual SIM capability and stock Android user interfaces.

The entry-level model is called the 35 Carbon, which offers a 3.5in 320 x 480 screen, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 4GB of storage and a microSD slot supporting cards up to 32GB. The rear camera is VGA.

Stepping up a level is the 50 Platinum. It comes with a 5in 960 x 540 display, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, 8MP rear camera, 1.2GHz quad-core A5 processor, 4GB of storage and up to 64GB of expandable storage via its SD slot.

Top of the range is the 53 Platinum, which is pretty much the same as the 50 but offers up a 5.3in screen and larger battery.

There’s no word on pricing yet, but the phones should be on sale within the next four or five weeks.
