BBC iPlayer app comes to the iPhone in the UK

Finally, the Beeb rewards our patience with an iPhone version of iPlayer to call our own

Your monthly data cap is about to take a big hit – iPlayer for iPhone is here, with 3G streaming.

And by here, we mean in the UK, since the BBC has been gallivanting around the globe with the overseas iPlayer app, trying to pick up a pretty penny for its TV and radio wares. Meanwhile, we’ve been languishing in Blighty with nothing but a paltry bookmark to the iPlayer site on our homescreens.

That’s about to change, though. iPhone users (sorry, the BBC’s not showing the iPod Touch any love for now) can now use a shiny iOS app to stream live TV or radio over Wi-Fi and 3G. You can also pipe programmes to your TV via AirPlay if you’ve got iOS 5 and Apple TV.

Auntie Beeb’s also enabled 3G streaming for the existing iPad app, and will be rolling out 3G streaming for the mobile web version of iPlayer for all other devices.

The newly-mobile iPlayer will use adaptive streaming, so if your signal drops out you’ll still be able to watch your programmes – though they might look a bit like they’re taking place in the blocky world of Minecraft.

Don’t forget to keep an eye on your data allowance – we can see the iPlayer chewing through your 1GB very quickly indeed.
