Looks like Philips just got itself some competition. No sooner does it bring out a brooding one-box surround bar than up pops our pal from Japan, Denon, with a rival.Like the Ambisound, it is a lesson in simplicity – or ‘plonk and play’ as Denon calls it. Simply plug it in, hook it up to your sat box or disc spinner and prepare to be enveloped in 150W of 5.1 audio. As with the Philips it comes with a separate sub for rumbles and doesn’t rely on bouncing audio off walls for its surround sound trickery, so there’s no need to position the sofa in the middle of the room. Oh and they cost exactly the same. So what’s the difference? Well the Denon doesn’t have a DVD player on board so misses out on that lovely Faroudja DCDi 1080p upscaling. Of course if you’ve already got an upscaler, or have made the switch to HD discs, that won’t trouble you too much. Decisions, decisions.Essentials Denon DHT-FS3 X-SPACE Surround ‘Bar’ Price: £700 On sale: August Contact: Denon Related stories: Philips SoundBar has us surrounded Gadget of the Day – Denon S-81DAB Marantz puts surround sound in one-box of tricks
