EE to launch 4G in 16 cities by Christmas
Everything Everywhere will roll out 4G LTE coverage to 98% of the UK population by 2014 on new EE network
With the news that Everything Everywhere has secured approval to roll out a 4G service this year, the company’s wasted no time in launching its new high-speed service – which it claims is up to five times faster than 3G.
Everything Everywhere will launch a new network called EE to carry the 4G service, which will be available in 16 cities by Christmas. The service is being tested in London, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol at this very moment – and 70% of the population will have 4G coverage by the end of 2013, growing to 98% by the end of 2014.
Devices available on EE at launch will include the Nokia Lumia 920 LTE, the Lumia 820 LTE (both exclusives), the Samsung Galaxy S3 LTE, the HTC One XL, and the Huawei Ascend P1. EE will also sell 4G dongles from Huawei. The EE service will include fibre broadband, which will be available to 11 million homes by the end of the year.
So, how to get yourself a slice of 4G goodness? You’ll have to switch to EE – Orange and T-Mobile customers won’t be able to access the service, though according to the @EE Twitter account, it’ll be easy for T-Mobile (and, we’d assume, Orange) customers to move to EE.
But will the iPhone 5 be available on the service? This close to Apple’s September 12th launch event, EE is keeping schtum. But EE CEO Olaf Swantee has dropped a whopper of a hint at today’s 4G launch event, using Steve Jobs’ iconic phrase: “One more thing: we will be announcing more devices very shortly.”
