Garmin launches Fenix GPS watch for off-trail tracking
Rugged GPS watch for adventurous types will survive whatever you can throw at it
Garmin is heading off the beaten track with its new Fenix GPS watch, aimed at seasoned outdoors types. As well as a GPS receiver, the Fenix packs in an altimeter, barometer and 3-axis electronic compass to help you find your way. You can also pair it up with Garmin’s Tempe temperature sensor, heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor to gather additional information on your surroundings and how you’re faring.
The Fenix is designed to be wilderness-proof – it’s waterproof to 50m and has 50 hours of battery life in GPS mode.
For hardened adventurers, it can record waypoints and GPS tracklogs, guiding you back along your previously recorded route if you get stuck in a sticky situation. Plus you can share routes using Bluetooth, ANT and Garmin’s own BaseCamp desktop app.
If you want to head into the wild woods – but want to find your way back again – you’ll need to start saving your pennies. The Garmin Fenix is priced at US$400, and will launch this autumn.
