Dead man walking! We didn’t see this one coming in our 2008 crystal ball gazing. The website of handheld console Gizmondo has come back to life with a message: “Rising again in 2008.”

The British gamer hasn’t been sighted since 2005, just as it was disappearing somewhere up its own marketing budget and Oxford Street flagship store. Then founder Stefan Eriksson wrote off a Ferrari Enzo that belonged to the banks. He was subsequently jailed in the States for embezzlement.

The unique handheld had once held some promise, with built-in GPS for sat-nav and location-based gaming and Bluetooth for hooking up online. But the money dried up and that was the end of that – we thought.

Now its website is boasting of Gizmondo Live with open-source gaming – including the ability to make your own – plus an online Gizmondo Live Marketplace that will “democratize” gaming.

In an interview with a Swedish website, the now released Eriksson claims the new version could be with us as soon as July.

Meanwhile, in what is either a comedy mistranslation or a bizarre new gaming genre, the Gizmondo site also promises “Exciting psychic worlds”.

Perhaps you can tell what we’re thinking about this whole idea then, Gizmondo…
