It seems Gizmondo just won’t die. Back in January the tawdry handheld was all set to blaze a trail back into gamers’ hands thanks to the power of Gizmondo Live. Then it was revealed to be an elaborate hoax, with comments about ‘psychic abilities’ by founder Carl Freer the victim of some less than impressive web translation.

Now though, the fastidious types over at Trademork have uncovered news that Freer and his company Media Power Inc (could it sound more like an evil conglomerate in a comic?) filed a patent on 18 April protecting the Gizmondo name.

Considering everyone connected with Gizmondo has been at pains to point out that their doomed device is not being resurrected, this is certainly a strange move. Could they be preparing another tilt at the handheld market? Or stopping some wily operator from using the name? Why anyone would actually do the latter remains a mystery.

With Bluetooth, GPS and location-based gaming, Gizmondo was a bit of a trend-setter back in the day. Freer has talked recently of exploring high-tech ventures, could this be one of them? What do you reckon? Let us know in the comments section.
