It looks like a new Apple TV 4K could be coming soon

Just our puck

It’s now been two and a half years since Apple updated its Apple TV 4K.

But if some good old fashioned online detective work is to be relied upon, we could be seeing the next-gen black box of fun pretty soon.

9to5Mac has spotted a reference to what sounds like new hardware in the tvOS 13.4 beta code. Currently codenamed T1125, the mysterious new model is likely still in prototype stage. The existing Apple TV 4K is labelled J105a by Apple, while J42d is the HD model.

Obviously, we don’t yet know anything about functionality or new features, but internal files seem to suggest that the T1125 device is based on the arm64e architecture that’s used in Apple’s A12 and A13 Bionic processors. The current Apple TV 4K runs on the A10 Fusion Chip.

All about Apple Arcade?

A considerably more powerful processor would be significant for a number of reasons, none more so than the fact that it would allow the Apple TV 4K to run more performance-demanding games.

Apple Arcade has been a big success so far, and now Google has launched Stadia, Apple might be thinking about going after an even bigger slice of the lucrative pie. 9to5Mac claims that the max resolution will remain at 4K with HDR support, but an 8K leap would be surprising given Apple’s traditionally patient approach to emerging technology.

A Spring event is rumoured, so if this new Apple TV 4K is indeed real, we might see if officially unveiled there.

About

I'm fascinated by all things tech, but if you were going to leave me on a desert island, I'd probably ask for my Nintendo Switch, a drone, and a pair of noise-cancelling cans to block out the relentless seagull racket. When I'm not on Stuff duty you'll probably find me subscribing to too many podcasts, playing too many video games, or telling anyone who will listen that Spurs are going to win a trophy this season.
