Apple wowed the crowds at WWDC 2012 with the reveal of its new 15.4in 2880×1800 Retina Display-toting MacBook Pro. We’ve just taken delivery of the Pro, so check out our first impressions and unboxing pics before getting stuck in with our hands on review.
Apple’s packaging design philosophy certainly hasn’t changed, with a white minimalist theme still going strong. The simple profile of the MacBook Pro on the reassuringly heavy box is all the encouragement we need to reveal its secrets…
Open it up and you’re met with a familiar sight – the lid of a silver MacBook, emblazoned with the all-white Apple logo. It’s fairly easy to tell that the Retina Display MacBook Pro’s lid is also thinner and less chunky than its predecessor’s.
Lift it up and you’re met with a fairly heavy slab of solid aluminium. It’s by no means in UltraBook or MacBook Air territory in terms of weight (despite its impressive thinness), but tossing it one-handed from desk to couch shouldn’t be a problem for all but the puniest of gadgeteers.
As we’ve come to expect, Apple has wrapped its Retina Display MacBook Pro in clear plastic, with a tab just begging to be ripped off. Think of it as giant metal Celebrations chocolate. If you like.
The Dairy Milk-like black tray simply holds a two part charger/power cable combo (with a new wider MagSafe connector) and a little black box which contains a quick-start guide, the usual pair of Apple stickers and a black screen cleaner for keeping that gorgeous display at its best. Speaking of which, let’s open up the lid, shall we?
Peeling back the paper screen protector and firing up the MacBook Pro to the fanfare of the familar Mac boot chime finally reveals the gorgeous display in all of its glory. The effect of those extra pixels is immediate with the scrolling welcome text posing no problems for our tech-riddled eyes.
