New Intel chips prompt laptop landslide

Intel's new Santa Rosa chips (now dubbed Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro) are now officially here and already there's been a raft of new laptop announce

Intel’s new Santa Rosa chips (now dubbed Centrino Duo and Centrino Pro) are now officially here and already there’s been a raft of new laptop announcements. The new processors promise faster wireless and better HD handling, which is just as well because HD DVD and Blu-ray are the flavours of the month.Top of the Santa Rosa pile is the 17.8in, Blu-ray-spinning, Sony AR range, which is now available with Centrino Duo innards. All new is the lightweight 15.4in FZ series with GeForce 8400M graphics and the optional Blu-ray drive.Acer’s come up with an entirely new design with its new much-lauded Gemstone concept (pictured). The first shiny specimen, the 5920, will have a Centrino Duo engine but bumps up the graphics with a GeForce 8600M-GT and opts for HD DVD for its movie needs. Meanwhile Evesham’s flying the flag for the UK with the bargain C515SR and the powerful C535S. Both get Centrino Duos and 15.4in widescreen displays. The £670 C515SR opts for the 1.8GHz T7100 processor while the £850 C535s crams in a 2.2GHz T7500 and Acer-matching 8600M graphics. They’re available now so go get ’em boys.
