New nuvi 500 sat-nav is built for anything

So you’re a keen cyclist who likes to drive long distance to go hiking at the weekend before relaxing on your boat? Looks like we’ve found the perfect sat-nav for you, then.

Garmin has combined its various GPS devices into one 3.5in unit, the nuvi 500, that’ll happily handle a spot of cross-country motoring before switching to cycling mode for a spell on two wheels.

Heading up a up a mountain without the aid of a 4×4 is no problem once it’s been loaded with optional TOPO outdoor maps (pictured) and it’ll also take to the waves when fed with specialist BlueChart marine charts.

Being waterproof it’s suited to outdoor life and the rechargable battery’s removable so you can keep a spare next to your Kendal mint cake and hip flask. No need for trail of breadcrumbs to find your way back either as it has a built-in track log to plot your progress.

If that all sounds too active for you then Garmin’s also come up with an update for its road and pavement centric Mobile XT software, which now plays nice with Google Maps for Mobile and Google’s Panoramio service for sharing geotagged snaps.

Finally there’s also news that Mobile XT will soon be available for GPS equipped BlackBerries. Look out for that from September, RIM fans.
