A Nokia spokesperson yesterday announced the company’s intention to begin selling WiMAX-enabled mobiles during 2008. Having left and subsequently rejoined the WiMAX forum, it appears it’s full steam ahead for the Finns. The only downside is that 2008 is very clearly not 2007, which is what we’d been hoping for.Wi-Fi on steroidsWiMAX, or Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, as it’s more snappily known, is similar in concept to Wi-Fi but allows wireless data access over much larger distances – typically around 30 miles. Expect it to feature heavily in future devices, such as the successor to the web-surfing Nokia 770 (pictured above) and make the whole country your hotspot.
