Ricoh Caplio R7 – wider, longer, faster

Ricoh’s Caplio R6 didn’t have much competition from its compact camera pals; only the Panasonic TZ3 can match its group-shot-friendly 28mm wide-angle and super zoom combo. Granted the TZ3 trumps it with a 10x zoom lens to the R6’s 7.1x, but for true compact proportions the R6 won hands down. Now Ricoh’s added to its list of charms by bumping up the megapixel count to a healthy 8.2 and tinkered away under the bonnet to fit it with a speedy Smooth Imaging Engine III processor.Like its predecessor it gets vibration correction and face recognition but now it promises lickety-split processing and reduced noise – something of a common complaint on the R6.We’ll let you know how the go faster stripes improve the performance as soon as we get our hands on one. In the meantime you can read up on our review of the TZ3 for a spot of comparison.Essentials Ricoh Caplio R7 Price: £230 On sale: September Contact: Ricoh Related stories: Casio revs up Exilim V8 and Z1080 Big-zooming SP-560 leads nine new Olympus cams Sony zooms in on Cyber-shot H3
