Google Nexus 7

from £160, google.com

Runners-up…

Apple iPad

There’s no denying it’s still the best in terms of ability, but it’s no longer as far ahead of the game.

Asus Transformer Pad Infinity

The Infinity adds a full HD screen to the already-excellent Prime.

Asus PadFone

Not perfect, but the potential is certainly there with Asus’ clever two-in-one tabphone/phablet.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1

The S Pen stylus adds a whole raft of extra creative functionality.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD

The Kindle Fire HD is excellent for movies but lags behind the Nexus 7 when it comes to apps.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7

The Tab 7.7 is luxuriously built, with a classy coating of aluminium.

Sony Xperia S Tablet

This solid tablet is Sony all over: great to look at, slick to use.
