Tangent’s Classic Bluetooth speaker looks like a basking shark’s mouth

…in a good way

There are tons of neat Bluetooth speakers at IFA, not least Elipson’s beautiful Habitat collaborations. But Tangent’s Classic stands above most for sheer design audacity.

It’s a dramatically simple 58cm-wide oval faintly reminiscent of a basking shark’s gaping maw, and its finished in a choice of walnut and ash plywoods for a premium, contemporary look. Very striking, very Danish.

See my lovely red label

Inside there are dual 40W mid/bass drivers, a pair of 25mm tweeters and a 5in subwoofer. Sound is streamed wirelessly to the speaker from you smartphone, tablet or laptop either via Bluetooth A2DP or lossless-quality aptX. There’s also a 3.5mm analogue input and a USB port for charging up a gadget as it plays.

The infra-red remote control is just as woody as the speaker, and there’s a bundled lump of ply to use as a stand for your phone.

You do pay for looks like this. It’s €600 and does little else to justify that cost. We didn’t get the chance to listen to it, but we’re hoping it has the audio chops to back up its price. We’ll let you know as soon as we do.

About

Will is a contributing editor and ex-Editor-in-Chief of Stuff. He's been here a while: since 2004, in fact. Things have changed a fair bit since then, although he still gets ribbed for his ongoing respect for 'pioneering' Windows Mobile PDAs. He lives in hope that a new gadget will some day emerge that excites him as much as his Amiga did when he was nine. (The iPhone came pretty close.)
