The AppStore will be built in to the new iPhone software, and will automatically notify you if apps you’ve bought have been updated. If it’s under 10MB you can download over the network, but only via Wi-Fi or download from iTunes if it’s bigger…

Loopt – A free social networking service that pinpoints and messages friends in your contact book who are in your area. Apparently it “makes serendipity happen”. Free.

eBay – Another free app, delivering all the usual eBay functions – bidding, watching, searching etc – in real time. Although all this can be done on the web, it’s a nice amalgamation.

Typepad – The largest pro blogging service in the world, also free. Now you can photoblog with gusto on your iPhone – pity the camera’s only 2MP.

AP – A canny move from the news service, allowing Joe Public to turn roving reporter and send news nuggets directly from iPhone, as well as access local news and video from AP.

Band – Probably the most fun app so far, which allows you to play a selection of virtual instruments on the iPhone’s touchscreen and create music from scratch. A novel new way to annoy commuters.

MLB.com – One for baseball fans (so Japanese and Americans mostly). News, scores and real-time video highlights for every game.

Modality – A medical learning application. No word if it can diagnose terminal boredom.

GAMES

Super Monkey Ball – DS-quality graphics tilter. At $10, it’s the most expensive app yet, but the DS-quality graphics herald the future of mobile gaming.

Cro Mag Rally – Nine tracks, ten cars in this crazy Neanderthal-based racing game, make full use of the accelorometer.

Enigmo – 50-level puzzler, where you to bounce streams of balls using the tilt function, natch.

Krull – A 3D action fantasy game with pretty slick graphics for those with World of Warcraft withdrawal. Out in September.
