Xbox founder says game-enabled Apple TV would dominate the market

Nat Brown, one of the founders of Microsoft’s Xbox project, claims that a game-enabled Apple TV would dominate the market and kill off all the major consoles.

Writing on his personal blog, Brown (who claims to be the one who came up with the name “Xbox”), vented his exasperation at the big console makers for failing to fully embrace the potential of their devices.

He was particularly upset about the lack of opportunity for small developers to make and sell games through the platforms: “Why can’t I write a game for xBox [sic] tomorrow using $100 worth of tools and my existing Windows laptop and test it on my home xBox or at my friends’ houses? Why can’t I then distribute it digitally in a decent online store… like I can for Android or iPhone, or for iPad?”

Brown feels that should Apple move into the living room gaming market through the Apple TV or the long-rumoured Apple HDTV, the company will completely dominate the market due to the way it enables smaller developers to create and sell software.

“Apple, if it chooses to do so, will simply kill PlayStation, Wii-U and xBox by introducing an open 30%-cut app/game ecosystem for Apple TV… I will be the first to write apps for Apple TV when I can, and I know I’ll make money. I would for xBox if I could and I knew I would make money.”
