Zoom, shake the room – Nikon Coolpix P900 comes with 83x lens

Nikon claims it can pick out details "not visible to the naked eye"

If you’re someone who likes taking photos of things that are a really, really long way away, or are quite small and just quite a long way away, get ready to be excited – because Nikon has just announced what could be the perfect snapper for you.

The company’s new Coolpix P900 bridge camera boasts a zoom lens of quite incredible capabilities: an optical zoom of 83x (equivalent to 24mm to 2000mm) and a maximum aperture of f/2.8 to f/6.5 gives it both incredible reach and (on paper) good low-light capabilities. It also has a digital zoom that extends the range to 166x – albeit at the loss of some detail.

And if you’re worried about those handheld telephoto shots looking all blurry, you needn’t be: the P900 also offers a new Dual Detect Optical Vibration Reduction technology (that image stabilisation to you and I) that compensates for movements from both the lens and the image sensor simultaneously. Nikon says it offers the equivalent of five extra stops of shutter speed.

Zoom, zoom, zoom

Also aboard is a 16MP CMOS sensor; a 3in vari-angle monitor and an electronic viewfinder; GPS, GLONASS and QZSS sensors for embedding your photos and videos with location information; and Wi-Fi and NFC for linking the camera to your mobile phone or tablet.

The Nikon Coolpix P900 will be on sale from 19th March, priced at around £500. Look out for a full review here very soon.
