A certain bandicoot might be getting ready to Crash onto PS4

Hints dropped at a toy fair have got fans excited for a return

Talk about a blast from the past – one of the earliest mascots for the original PlayStation could be gearing up to make a return to a Sony console.

Crash Bandicoot has been MIA since 2008’s Mind Over Mutant, but an offhand comment at this week’s New York Toy Fair has raised hopes that he’s on his way back.

YouTube channel PixelDan Eardley got the scoop from Randy Falk, head of development for NECA. The company has licenses to make toys and collectibles based on plenty of Sony’s game brands, including God of War and Uncharted.

“We’ve got a lot of stuff going on with Sony,” Falk says. “Looking at some of their other titles, I see that they’re bringing Crash Bandicoot back …”

NECA since told GameSpot that the company wasn’t producing Crash figurines, and that Falk merely mistook a fan-made image as something official, but this wouldn’t be the first clue that Crash was getting ready for a reboot.

Sony has dropped hints about a return for the barmy bandicoot in the past. Head of PlayStation North America Shawn Layden wore a Crash t-shirt at the PlayStation Experience in December, and Sony Middle East posted a Crash wanted poster to its Facebook page last month.

There’s one problem holding up any chance of Crash making a comeback, though.

Sony doesn’t actually own the rights to the character – that would be Activision, despite the series being created by Sony’s in-house developer Naughty Dog. If Crash was to come back as a console exclusive, it would mean Sony had made a deal with Activision to acquire the rights.

Nothing’s impossible right now, but until we hear anything official, you can chalk this one up to the rumour mill.
