These are the games you can play for free on Xbox Live Gold this August
Forza Horizon 2 and For Honor lead a stellar August offering
FREE FOR ALL
Each and every month you’ll find a handful of gratis games to download on Xbox One, as well as a couple for Xbox 360, and they’re yours to keep so long as you keep paying for the subscription. However, there is one catch to the Games with Gold promotion: they’re only available to download for a few weeks apiece, and then you won’t find them free again. Luckily, we’ve got you covered: these are the free Xbox Live Gold games that are available in August 2018, across both consoles, and we’ll keep this space updated with each month’s new picks. And if you still haven’t snagged July’s free games, then you’ll find those listed at the bottom. Hurry!
FORZA HORIZON 2 (XB1)
It’s a few years old at this point, and Forza Horizon 4 arrives this autumn – but if you haven’t played the great Forza Horizon 2, now’s the time to jump on this wild open-road racer and cruise across the Franco-Italian countryside while completing speedy festival challenges. This one’s free throughout August.
DEATH SQUARED (XB1)
Here’s an indie game that’s seen some strong reviews: Death Squared is a cooperative puzzle experience that requires teamwork to guide multiple robots to colour-coded goals. Obviously, it’s never that straightforward. Grab it between 16 July and 15 August.
FOR HONOR (XB1)
We weren’t too hot on this medieval fighter when it launched, but like some of Ubisoft’s other recent titles, For Honor has been gradually improved – and it boasts a die-hard community. And now that it’ll be free from 16 August through 15 September, you can grab your battle axe and give it a shot.
DEAD SPACE 3 (XB1/360)
Both previous survival horror/action entries have been Games with Gold freebies, and now Electronic Arts’ Dead Space 3 joins the fray. The series-capper shifts the action to an ice planet, and while it wasn’t as widely praised as the earlier picks, it’s still worth a look. It’s free from 1-15 August.
EPIC MICKEY 2: THE POWER OF TWO (XB1/360)
And lastly, something for the young – or at least the young of heart. Epic Mickey 2 is a 3D platform game that pairs a magic paintbrush-wielding Mickey with forgotten Disney mascot Oswald for a suitably Epic adventure. Reviews weren’t great, but at least the concept is charming. This one’s free from 16 August through the end of the month.
