Games Watch: the 5 best new games coming out in September 2017
From big hitters to indies, here are the console and PC games that have us talking this month
Between button-mashing and VR stick-waving, it’s all too easy to miss some magnificent game releases.
Not anymore, though. See, we’re always on the hunt for the next game to steal months of our lives – and the last thing we want is to miss it because we’re too busy playing the last one.
So, with that in mind, here’s your monthly compendium of the five most scintillating new releases coming before October rolls around. You can thank us later.
Destiny 2 – 6 September
Almost three years to the date after the original, Destiny 2 arrives next week to kick-start another epic sci-fi shoot-and-loot grind. When The Last City on Earth falls, you’ll have to fight together to take down Dominus Ghaul and the Red Legion.
Many of you have probably already played the multiplayer beta, so you know what to expect: more Destiny, sure, but also a seemingly much-improved storyline, a big graphical boost, and loads of fresh content to explore. Get your fireteam ready, Guardians.

Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite – 19 September
The Marvel vs. Capcom games are always a blast, promising huge rosters and plenty of rapid fighting action, although Infinite comes with a few twists.
First is the new Infinity Stones mechanic, which lets you pick one of the titular stones that comes with a special ability. Infinite also has a proper story mode, like in Street Fighter V, and is said to be more accessible than past entries. However, the roster has cut out the X-Men entirely, which seems like heresy given the series’ origins and history… but we imagine it’ll still be plenty fun without Wolverine and pals.

Project Cars 2 – 22 September
Sony’s Gran Turismo Sport is coming out later this year (supposedly), but we might have the end-all, be-all racing simulator before the month’s up – that’s if Project Cars 2 lives up to the immense hype, of course.
The original Project Cars was an impressive, crowdfunded debut that nearly stood toe to toe with the sim-racing genre’s giants, and the sequel promises much, much more: loads more licensed cars, dynamic weather, rallycross action, VR action, and 12K (total) triple-monitor support on PC. Oh, and it looks like a dream, based on the trailer above.

FIFA 18 – 29 September
The battle of the heavyweight football titans begins anew this month, and both look stronger than ever. Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 strikes first in a couple weeks, while FIFA 18 arrives at the tail end of September.
We’re not picking a favourite yet, but FIFA has been the stalwart champion in recent years, and we were impressed by our hands-on demo of FIFA 18 back around E3. It’s prettier than ever, the players and A.I. feel more differentiated, it plays a bit more tactical than last year, and the entertaining Story Mode returns.
And it’s coming out for Switch, too, offering footie fun wherever you are – albeit with a noticeable visual hit from the higher-end console editions.

Cuphead – 29 September
It feels like we’ve been waiting roughly forever for Cuphead to actually release, but it looks like it’s finally, finally happening. What’s the big deal? Well, just watch the trailer!
Cuphead is absolutely gorgeous, miming the style of 1930s cartoons with a nicely surreal edge, and pitting Cuphead and Mugman against large, colouful, tough-as-nails bosses. It’s not your average triple-A fare, certainly, but Cuphead is surely one of the most distinctive Xbox One console exclusives of autumn, and should provide a nice respite from the various massive blockbusters releasing throughout the rest of 2017.
