These are the games you can play for free on PlayStation Plus in August
Eight freebies in August, including Mafia III and Dead by Daylight
FREE FOR ALL
Each and every month, Sony trots out a new selection of games you can download for free all month and then keep and play forever, so long as you maintain your Plus subscription. You’ll always find at least a couple of PlayStation 4 picks, along with games for PS3 and Vita as well. Looking for a heads-up on which games you can grab right now and soon ahead? We’ve got you covered: these are the UK’s PlayStation Plus freebies for August 2018, which will be available to download starting 7 August. And if you didn’t grab July’s free downloads yet, then scroll further down for a quick look at those titles.
DEAD BY DAYLIGHT (PS4)
Well, this sounds both freaky and fun: Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer game in which one player takes the role of a bloodthirsty murderer, and the other four play as survivors working together to escape. Big-screen baddies like Michael Meyers and Freddy Krueger only amp up the tension here.
MAFIA III (PS4)
2K’s latest entry takes the open-world action series in a fresh direction, as Vietnam vet Lincoln Clay returns home to the New Orleans-like New Bordeaux in the 1960s. You’ll avenge your crew while taking out rivals, and while GTA-like action is a bit samey, Mafia III builds a unique premise and has a more nuanced story than most.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER (PS4)
One of the PlayLink games for PS4, Knowledge is Power lets you use your smartphone or tablet to answer trivia questions. The device-centric approach means a bunch of your mates can join in without you having to wrangle (or purchase) a bunch of DualShock controllers.
HERE THEY LIE (PSVR)
Horror games are absolutely perfect for virtual reality, trapping you inside their tense and atmospheric worlds—so this month’s bonus PlayStation VR pick, Here They Lie, should be plenty compelling for anyone willing to take the challenge. Who’s the woman in the yellow dress? Enter this black-and-white world to find out… if you dare.
BOUND BY FLAME (PS3)
Reviews suggest that this BioWare-esque fantasy role-player does its best Dragon Age/Mass Effect/Elder Scrolls impression, but ultimately ends up coming short of any of those genre giants. Luckily, it’s free this month – and anyone still playing on a PS3 today can’t be too choosy.
SERIOUS SAM 3: BFE (PS3)
Sam might be serious, but his games are thankfully anything but. Like the others, Serious Sam 3: BFE is a fast-paced, anything-goes first-person shooter with insane enemies, cartoonishly grotesque violence, and absolutely no cover system to slow things down. Grab a shotgun and go wild.
DRAW SLASHER (VITA)
Draw Slasher makes full use of the PlayStation Vita’s touch display, letting you swipe to guide a small ninja’s slashes against foes. That’s… about it, really. It looks like a very simple mobile game, to be honest, but it might be a fair diversion for Vita owners this month.
SPACE HULK (VITA)
The legendary Warhammer: 40,000 universe gets a Vita rendition with Space Hulk, a turn-based strategy game that pits your Blood Angel Terminators against the Genestealers. It’s based on the classic board games, but reviews suggest that it didn’t land all that well on the handheld.
