J.J. Abrams and Infinity Blade makers team up for new game, Spyjinx

Espionage game for PC and mobile is due out next year

As the guiding hand behind the film revivals of both Star Wars and Star Trek, director J.J. Abrams has become a real force in the pop culture universe. And now he’s teaming up with a top mobile studio to co-create his first video game.

Chair Entertainment is the team behind the smashing Infinity Blade trilogy (shown) on iOS, as well as the fantastic Shadow Complex from Xbox 360, and it has partnered with Abrams’ Bad Robot Interactive to create Spyjinx. The new gaming franchise will launch first on mobile platforms and PC sometime next year.

Admittedly, there’s little to share beyond the name and some vague design concepts, although the creative forces attached certainly put it on our radar for next year. Chair says the Unreal Engine-powered game will deliver “a unique mix of action-strategy gameplay, dynamic world-building and RPG character development – all set in a thrilling, treacherous world of espionage.”

"I’ve been a fan of video games for years, envious of the artists and storytellers who have gotten to play in that world. Over two years ago, we met with the geniuses at Chair in the hopes of collaborating with them," says Abrams. "The result has been something beyond any of our expectations. Since then we have been working closely with them to create something that I cannot wait to get into the hands of gamers all over the world."

Although hard details are pretty thin, you can sign up for a closed beta test now – although it also won’t start until 2016 rolls around. Watch the video above to see Abrams and Chair co-founder Donald Mustard discuss the creative process behind their collaboration.
