Minecraft launching on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 this week with bigger worlds and upgrade discount

If you bought the last-gen version, you can get the new one for much, much less

We doubt many of you bought a new console just for the ability to play Minecraft, but if you did snag a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, you can start exploring block worlds within mere days.

Microsoft has announced that Minecraft: Xbox One Edition will be available this Friday, and while there’s no official release from Sony just yet, developer Mojang’s Daniel Kaplan says on Twitter that the PlayStation 4 version should launch “hopefully later today” on PlayStation Network.

Owners of the Xbox 360 version (digital or retail) will be able to upgrade to Xbox One for just £3.99, otherwise, the full price for the game is £15.99. The PlayStation 4 version will offer a similar upgrade for PS3 game owners, and likely have the same price points.

Both entries are very similar in feature set, offering a much larger version of the game than seen on previous-gen consoles. You’ll be able to create worlds up to 36 times larger, plus all past worlds can be transferred over to the newer version on each side, and the same add-on content can be downloaded again.

The Xbox One Edition will also hit retail stores in a disc-based iteration later this year, and it’s likely that the PlayStation 4 version will do the same. A PlayStation Vita version of the game is also due out, at least digitally, but it’s unclear if it will launch alongside the PS4 release this week.
