Oculus Rift pre-orders begin this Wednesday, 6 January
Release date and price? Nope - but you can order the VR headset this week
Oculus VR has been rifling off details in the last couple weeks, first announcing a couple of free pack-in games for the Rift headset and then admitting that the Touch controllers will arrive late. And now come the actual ordering details.
Well, one ordering detail: you’ll be able to pre-order the consumer version of the Oculus Rift this Wednesday, 6 January. Pre-orders will kick off at 8am Pacific Time that morning, which translates to 4pm in the UK. So if you’ve been eyeing the PC-based virtual reality headset as it has developed in the public eye in recent years, the time to drop your money is nigh.
How much money? Well, we don’t know. And when will the headset actually reach you? Again, that hasn’t been revealed. Essentially, today’s news is an announcement of an announcement, which is a bit frustrating as these details get slowly dropped like so many breadcrumbs.
That said, Oculus VR says that all the details you need will be available on Wednesday morning when the pre-orders go live. Furthermore, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey will hold a Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything) session on Wednesday evening at 6pm Pacific (that’s 2am on Thursday, 7 January in the UK) to dig into further details.
Full-fledged consumer VR is nearly upon us, and the coming arrival of pre-orders for the Oculus Rift is a huge step towards that long-awaited reality. As Oculus recently announced, both space shooter EVE: Valkyrie and 3D platformer Lucky’s Tale will be bundled with the headset, and we should have the rest of the essential details here before the week is out. Hopefully.
