Spotify Running mode finally arrives on Android

Spotify trying to up its game

Spotify’s Running mode, previously exclusive to its iOS app, has now turned up on Android phones. Its main feature is its ability to find and play music that matches the user’s jogging pace, which is designed to enhance those chilly morning runs by increasing focus and immersion.

The function utilises a smartphone’s sensors to determine the pace of the user, then selects songs from Spotify’s 20 million-strong song library that match the tempo. You could say that it helps motivate runners for a much longer and more focused run. The app also features themed playlists, so if you want to run along to a selection of pure reggae or punk, that’s totally doable.

Running is one of the key differentiators that marks Spotify out from the increasingly large pack of rival music streaming services out there, so it’s good to see it finally arrive on Android devices. (Windows Mobile users may have to wait quite a bit longer, we fear. But, well, they’re probably used to that.) Currently, the likes of Apple Music, Tidal and Deezer don’t have anything to match it.

The app is already available to Android users and can be downloaded from the Play Store here. You can read our review of the current incarnation of Spotify here.
