The universe must wait: No Man’s Sky delayed into August
Hello Games' epic space odyssey needs a couple extra months
It’s the news that gaming fans didn’t want to hear: No Man’s Sky has been delayed less than a month before its long-held release date, confirming a report from earlier this week.
Some fans really, really didn’t want to hear it, with one sending a threat of violence to the Kotaku reporter who broke the story – thoroughly absurd behaviour. But it’s true, and Sony and Hello Games waited to dump the news late on Friday.
Instead of releasing on 24 June, as planned, the PlayStation 4 and PC game will instead debut on 12 August in the UK, 10 August elsewhere in Europe, and 9 August in the United States.
"As we approached our final deadlines, we realised that some key moments needed extra polish to bring them up to our standards. I have had to make the tough choice to delay the game for a few weeks to allow us to deliver something special," wrote Sean Murray, founder of Hello Games.
"We understand that this news is disappointing," he added." Making this game is the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, but we are so close now, and we’re prepared to make the tough choices to get it right."
We went hands-on with No Man’s Sky back in March and were simultaneously amazed and confounded, ultimately still "massively excited to play the full game." Sadly, it’ll be a little longer than expected before we get that opportunity, but better that Hello gets it right from the start.
