Toshiba’s 46YL863 might have a knockdown price – you can now pick one up for less than £800 – but it’s still got all the credentials of a flagship TV.

It’s styling is clinical and minimal with a wand-like aluminium-and-black remote that’s really gunning for a ‘Bang & Olufsen on a budget’ vibe (and that’s a compliment). The new-look interface has clearly been given plenty of consideration too – everything’s neatly organised, from the picture settings to the Toshiba Places smart TV hub.

There’s plenty of processing power inside this slim screen too, and while it may be low on smart TV choices, the picture does much to impress. You don’t get quite the subtlety of the TVs that cost about £1000 more, but bold colours and clean edges make it wonderfully watchable in SD and HD alike.

That said, if you’re glued to the box for the Euros you might find cause to quibble with the rendition of Theo Walcott at full pace, as the TV occasionally loses composure with the very fastest moving objects.

Pop the 3D specs on, and you’ll get a subtle and comfortable take on the third dimension – if perhaps less grin-inducing than some rivals.

The Toshiba makes minor performance compromises, but the price does much to soften the blow. With its innovative backlighting tech and considerable picture-processing ability, Toshiba’s new telly is a performance powerhouse. It’s also stylish, well equipped – 3D, DLNA and decent smart TV services are all included – and terrific value for money.
