Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare revealed

Some wondered if Activision’s Call of Duty first-person shooter franchise would return to its World War II roots after several years of near-future action, but it’s quite the opposite, really. Instead, this year’s Advanced Warfare will fling the series forward to the year 2054.

With it comes powered exoskeletons, hover bikes, and cloaked airships—also actor Kevin Spacey, who provides his voice and likeness to Jonathan Irons, the head of a private military corporation that declares war on the United States.

Advanced Warfare is due out on 4 November for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Sledgehammer Games, the co-developer of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, is heading up development.

Samsung owes Apple US$119+ million for infringement

Samsung Galaxy S3

The second big trial between Apple and Samsung finally reached its verdict on Friday, with a jury awarding Apple US$119,625,000 in damages due to infringement of its patents by several Samsung devices.

That number is likely to change this week as the jury reconvenes to consider additional damages due to infringement by the Samsung Galaxy S2. Apple was also found to infringe on Samsung’s patents in the trial, but the damages awarded came to just US$158,400.

Back in 2012, the first trial between the mobile heavyweights resulted in Apple being awarded US$1.05 billion in damages, which was later reduced to US$939.8 million. In both cases, the figure awarded was much smaller than Apple requested, but they help solidify the perception that Samsung’s success has come on the back of Apple’s various innovations.
