Motorola’s Moto G line has routinely pumped out some of the top budget phones of the last few years but these days there are three distinct models: the G6 Play, G6 Plus and standard G6. With 5-star reviews for each, how do you pick the one that’s right for you? If you’re looking for a speedy take on the differences between each of Moto’s wallet-friendly phones, read on.
Moto G6 Play (£169)
The Moto G6 Play is the cheapest offering of the bunch but its high-gloss plastic finish and 5.7in 18:9 screen make it look and feel a lot more premium than the price tag suggests. Only the 720p resolution gives it away. With a Snapdragon 430 processor and 3GB of RAM performance is solid, but besides the price, the biggest selling point is its enormous 4000mAh battery, which dwarfs the other models. Admittedly the camera isn’t great but the G6 Play offers incredible value for such an affordable phone. Buy the Moto G6 Play if… you’re on a very tight budget and want a phone that lasts and lasts
Moto G6 (£219)
A bit flashier than the Play, but slightly less-equipped than the pricier Pro, the standard Moto G6 is the happy medium. The 5.7in, 1080p screen is crisper, while the back is glass instead of plastic. Its dual cameras also deliver much-improved low-light performance and solid everyday shots, even if it can be a bit slow. With a Snapdragon 450 chip and 4GB RAM it offers much snappier performance than the Play, although its 3000mAh battery is a step down. Buy the Moto G6 if… you want an all-around great budget phone that does a lot of things right
Moto G6 Plus (£269)
The G6 Plus uses the standard model as a starting point and makes a few tweaks for a £50 premium. You’ll get a slightly larger 5.9in LCD screen, Snapdragon 630 chip with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. The 3200mAh battery feels a smidge more resilient too, and while the dual-camera setup is the same but it’s just as worthwhile here. Altogether it’s worth the extra cash, but equally, none of those tweaks make the standard Moto G6 feel outclassed. Buy the Moto G6 Plus if… you’ve got the extra budget to spend and tend to push your phone a bit harder
Which should you buy?
Picking one of three five-star phones is a bit like choosing an ice cream on the hottest day of the year: you’ll be happy with any of them but each one offers a slightly different experience. If you can afford it and think you’ll make the most of the extra grunt the G6 Plus is the one to go for, but don’t pay for it if you don’t need it. The G6 offers good balance all round, while the G6 Play has to be one of the most easy-to-recommend phones under the £200 mark – assuming you can put up with a few expected performance quirks. If you have a strict budget, stick to it – you’ll be pleasantly surprised with whichever handset falls within it.
