HTC’s Vive Focus offers wireless ‘world-scale tracking’ for the first time
No PC needed here
Hot on the heels of Oculus’ recent announcement splurge – in which it we were shown an affordable, standalone headset called Oculus Go – comes HTC’s cord-cutting Vive Focus. Like the Go, it’s an all-in-one headset that can take you to alien worlds, haunted houses and the Rick & Morty garage, without the assistance of an almighty PC and an assortment of external trackers. Virtual reality, then, without the faff that puts a lot of people off. Powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip, Vive Focus features an AMOLED display and inside-out tracking with six-degrees-of-freedom. HTC has coined the term ‘world tracking’, which basically means you can use the headset anywhere you like. Just avoid cupboards, yeah? Sadly, we don’t have much in the way of pricing details yet, and there are no concrete release plans outside of China. Watch this space.
