New Star Wars action game coming from EA and Titanfall studio Respawn
With God of War 3's director at the helm, no less
It’s Star Wars day (“May the Fourth,” and all that), and if you’re a fan of Star Wars Battlefront, you’ll get perks for playing before the day’s up – but EA is already turning its attention towards its next big Star Wars experience.
And there is plenty of reason to be excited. Today, Electronic Arts and Titanfall maker Respawn Entertainment announced that they’re working on a third-person Star Wars action/adventure game, with God of War 3 director Stig Asmussen serving in the same role on this project.
Respawn is currently knee-deep in development on Titanfall 2, which will be fully unveiled at E3 next month and is expected to release by the end of the year. By contrast, Asmussen says the Star Wars project is still very early; don’t be surprised if it’s a good couple of years before it releases.
“We promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honored as a central game design tenet,” he writes. “Fans should expect the exemplary level of quality first established at Respawn with Titanfall, a game that epitomizes our studio’s dedication to slick, larger-than-life action and fun, groundbreaking mechanics.”
"Developing a game within the ever-expanding Star Wars universe opens up so many paths for us to go down, and an unparalleled playground to design within," he also added. "We have already planted the seeds by assembling a small, but incredibly talented team, ready for the amazing journey that lies ahead."
Respawn is hiring for several key positions to help make the game, which suggests there may be very little of the game to show anytime soon – perhaps even not at E3 this year.
But at least it shows some promise that EA plans to do plenty with this huge license, and maybe we’ll get a game that delivers on the promise of LucasArts’ sadly cancelled Star Wars 1313 from a few years back.
