Oregon Scientific Action Cam review

You’ve been telling all your friends for years how good you are on the slopes – and now it’s time to prove it. Oregon Scientific’s Action Cam is a rugged little camera that can be strapped to your bonce, leaving your hands free for balance and self-defence from trees.

Look, no wires!

The Action Cam is a self-contained unit, so there are no leads running to a recording unit, and all the footage is captured on an SD card.

Its straps are best used with a helmet as they aren’t as secure or comfortable attached directly to your head. There are also other mountings for attaching to things like the handlebars of a mountain bike, if you fancy going Ktrakking.

The Action Cam is waterproof to 3 meters, so even a heavy snowfall won’t faze it. This also means it’s ideal for kayaking or anything else you want film around water.

One hour video

You can either play the footage back via your TV or dump it onto a PC via USB 2.0. On board memory isn’t exactly huge – just 32MB – but an SD slot supports cards up to 2GB. Film in its highest quality setting of 640×480 at 30 frames per second, and you’ll get about an hour of recording time.

While video quality is clearly below the level of modern camcorders – if you want a tough sports camcorder check out the Panasonic SDR-S10 – the picture is pretty good and you do get the convenience of having both hands free. And, besides, we’re doubt you’ll want to see that footage of your face being planted into the half-pipe in Imax quality.
