Sony Ericsson’s survey of clamshell mobile buyers threw up a surprising result – behind things like 3G functionality, looks and a decent camera, people were craving for an invisible external display. It hurried back to the drawing board, and the Z610 was born.
There are signs that this phone’s designers got a little carried away with their brief. For instance, the inclusion of OLED tech for the external display – as seen on the now defunct Q-Be MP3 player – apparently gives it the ‘feel of a calm ocean surface’. Oceans aren’t that calm in our experience, but the illusion of caller ID info floating on the front is a nice touch.
Elsewhere, the phone is a classic slice of Sony Ericsson gateau. There’s 3G connectivity for surfing the web, Bluetooth, and the same excellent 2MP camera that you’ve seen on phones like the K750i.
This snapper has an added bonus in the form of the ‘Picture Blog’ application, which lets you blog photos instantly in much the same way as Sony Eric’s Cybershot K800 digicam-phone hybrid.
You can get extra storage for more photos in the form of Memory Stick Micros (otherwise known as M2 cards) which disappointingly still max out at 1GB, although this is enough for about 2800 snaps.
All that’s left is for you to decide between ‘luster black’, ‘rose pink’ or ‘airy blue’. Well, we did warn you about those designers.
