Our roundup of the curious, fun, and noteworthy news from around the world of tech

Behold HattrickWear, the augmented reality cap

Can’t shell out £1,000 for Google Glass, but still want the sensation of a heads-up display pumping info into your eyes? Check out HattrickWear, a soon-to-be-crowdfunded (or not) hat that claims to be an affordable and open platform for such things.

You’ll be able to slot your phone into the long brim of the hat, and then attach a small prism that reflects part of the screen into view. The design purportedly distributes the weight evenly enough to keep your head from sinking as you wear it, and it looks… super cool… right? Honestly, it’s difficult to tell if this is real or not, but it’s supposedly set to launch on Kickstarter at some point.

Dance Central Spotlight out 2 September

Microsoft might have turned its back on the Kinect when it pulled the motion-sensing device from the lower-priced Xbox One console option, but developers haven’t (entirely) just yet. Dance Central Spotlight, the new-gen version of the original Kinect’s most recognizable experience, will launch for US$9.99 on 2 September, developer Harmonix announced yesterday.

The downloadable release will feature 10 built-in songs—including some of the catchiest jams of the last couple years, like Pharrell Williams’ “Happy,” Lorde’s “Royals,” and “Titanium” from David Guetta and Sia—with another 50+ songs available for purchase on day one.

If you already purchased the song on Xbox 360, it’ll be available for free on Xbox One, which will hold true for future add-on tracks from previous entries. Each song in the game will feature eight different routines (more than ever before), plus an enhanced fitness mode promises targeted workouts.

BBC Sport apps updated with Chromecast support

BBC Sport

With the Commonwealth Games kicking off later this week, BBC has updated its BBC Sport apps for both Android and iOS with support for Google’s Chromecast dongle. Users will now be able to stream content to a television from either version of the app, and both have been updated with customizable alerts for the games.

Media Molecule teases new PS4 project—maybe

LittleBigPlanet creator Media Molecule isn’t behind this fall’s LittleBigPlanet 3—development duties have been passed off to Sumo Digital—but the Guildford studio appears to be working on something for PlayStation 4. Whether this video actually shows any of that isn’t especially clear.

“A rendering error on our new PS4 project caused this trippy sequence of colourful nonsense that begged to be shared,” reads the YouTube description. “Consider it an exclusive peek at our new game if you like, it’s not particularly revealing, but it is fun, that much we guarantee… mostly.”

Media Molecule showed off a rather curious tech demo at the reveal of the PlayStation 4 in February 2013, but there’s been no word on that becoming a full, proper game. But considering the studio’s amazing pedigree—thanks to LBP and last year’s Tearaway on Vita—whatever they’re working on is worth keeping an eye out for.
