Online gaming on the go is fun, but after a tough day at the office chucking a car around a circuit can feel a bit like hard work. Luckily there are plenty of more cerebral options out there, and for the social, lots of thinky-multiplayer games to boot. Super Stickman Golf 2 (iOS, Android)- £1.99
Real-world golf is awesome. Digital golf is often less so; keeping a sharp eye on digital sliders and wind directions can grow old fast. Super Stickman Golf 2 injects a big dollop of fun into proceedings, crossing a good old bash at the fairway with an old-school platformer. Play your way across floating platforms and do battle with par-ruining features such as teleportation portholes, ice and flying magnets, and take on a human opponent in the turn-based multiplayer mode.
Scrabble (iOS, Android) – £Free
A classic choice, yes, and it’s just a little disappointing that digital versions of Scrabble preclude post-move arguments about the legitimacy of words (although the integrating messaging system still allows a little debate), but the app version of Scrabble is still plenty entertaining, and the multiplayer mode makes an otherwise dull commute feel a little more sociable, particularly if you can wrap your head around a few games at a time.
Draw Something (iOS, Android) – £Free
Hilarious from the start and occasionally incredibly rude, Draw Something is a turn-based take on Pictionary. It’s brilliantly simple: choose a word and illustrate it. Your opponent can watch your drawing take place and has to guess the word you’re attempting to draw, with coins awarded based on the difficulty of the word you choose to draw. Coins can be spent on different colours to help your drawings get a higher success rate, and Draw Something is just as much fun if you’re playing against a total stranger.
Strategery (iOS) – £1.49
A masterfully simple, wonderfully executed game of strategy. You start with a map and a simple aim: occupy as much of the map as possible before your opponent does. The single-player mode is diverting for a week or so, but the multiplayer – available as either pass-and-play or online – is an addiction for the ages. Maps are randomly generated, so you’ll never play the same game twice. A must-have for fans of Risk and fans of strategy alike.
Words with friends (iOS, Android) – £Free
A game of Scrabble too much of a commitment? Words with Friends will test your vocabulary just much as Hasbro’s classic, but looks cuter and games take less time; handy for firing off a few moves on the train or running multiple games at a time. There are leaderboards to climb and, of course, plenty of in-app purchases to help things along, although the purchase-averse will get plenty of enjoyment out of the default, free, game.
