The World Air Guitar Championships could be in turmoil this year with news that Australian scientists have finally created an air guitar that metal fans may be willing to wear. For rather than using yellow mitts, this solution employs that icon of rock: the t-shirt.Possibly the best thing to be invented by our Antipodean friends since Tooheys New, the ‘wearable instrument shirt’ works using sensored-up textiles which detect the wild thrashings of the wearer’s two flailing arms. Bending one arm gives the chord while the other strums majestically.Unlike its stringed cousin, air guitar is easy to transport by simply, er, wearing it, and can even be strummed while playing sports (tennis and squash especially). Not sure when we’ll see this one at the Royal Academy, or even the Brixton Academy, but you can see two short films of it in action on the Sydney Morning Herald’s website.
