Apple releases iOS 8 for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
The servers are swamped and it requires lots of space, but the new iOS is here
As planned, Apple has released its latest major mobile operating system update, iOS 8, to a select array of iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices – but you’ll need a ton of space to actually install it.
The iOS 8 update requires a 1.4GB download, but beyond that, you’ll need 5.7GB of available storage space to complete installation on an iPhone or iPod touch, and a whopping 6.9GB of space on an iPad.
By all indications, the myriad enhancements and additions seen in iOS 8 make it a very worthwhile upgrade, but if you’re in no rush, maybe give it a couple days – servers have thus far been buckling under the weight of millions of simultaneous upgrade requests (no surprise there). And you shouldn’t update to iCloud Drive just yet, since it only works with the to-be-released OS X Yosemite.
As previously revealed, iOS 8 works with a solid handful of current devices within the Apple ecosystem, including the iPhone 4S and newer, iPad 2 and newer (including iPad mini), and the fifth-generation iPod touch.
