Breathometer turns your phone into a breathaliser

Pocket-sized add-on that tracks your blood alcohol level pops up on crowdfunding site Indiegogo

The idea behind the Breathometer is a simple one: it’s a tiny add-on for the iPhone or an Android device that gives you an accurate reading of your blood alcohol level. And now you can reserve your own by backing its Indiegogo campaign.

The device, which is about the size of a car key, clips to your phone via its headphone jack and requires a companion app. You simply breathe your boozy breath into it and it’ll tell you whether or not it’s safe for you to drive. The makers plan to add more features in the future, such as a button that lets you summon a nearby cab if you have overindulged on the vino.

Back the Indiegogo campaign to the tune of US$20 and you’ll receive your own Breathometer by January 2014.
