Call of Duty: Black Ops III announced, with big reveal promised later this month
Treyarch is back to make its smash shooter saga a trilogy, with a release later in 2015
So much for the slow, subtle trickle of teasers. After mysterious codes added to Call of Duty: Black Ops II maps pointed observent players towards an odd Snapchat video, Activision has come out and officially announced the next series entry.
It’s Call of Duty: Black Ops III, of course, and developer Treyarch is heading up development again to turn the shooter subseries into a trilogy. Earlier in the day, Activision released a “Back in Black” teaser video (below, since renamed) that made it very strongly clear that Black Ops III would be the next Call of Duty (see shadowy silhouette of the original game’s cover star above).
But in case that wasn’t obvious enough, the publisher pushed out a blog post noting that the game will be out later this year, and that a full-fledged world reveal of the game will occur on 26 April. Also, “there’s so much to talk about,” but of course there is.
The original Call of Duty: Black Ops, released in 2010, placed most of its action in the 1960s during the Cold War, along with a mission set during World War II. However, 2012’s Black Ops II shifted most of the action to the drone-swarmed future setting of 2025, with some missions flashing back to the 1980s. It also implemented branching story elements, with multiple endings available.
Call of Duty has carried on the future-tech hook since, with 2013’s Ghosts and last year’s Advanced Warfare, and it seems likely that Black Ops III will do the same (at least partially). We’ll find out in a couple short weeks, however, and we’re sure to see much more when the E3 expo kicks off in mid-June.
