Mobile mogul Carphone Warehouse won the auction for AOL UK, giving them access to its 2.1 million customers, roughly three quarters of whom use broadband connections.Parent company Time Warner put the UK AOL business up for auction but will retain the right to sell advertising on the AOL site, and will also take care of Talk Talk via a revenue-sharing agreement. This makes Carphone the owner of the third-biggest internet provider in the UK.It also means the company will be able to streamline and boost the support for its ‘free broadband’ deal, which has so far cost millions in start-up costs and left some customers smarting at installation delays.
