It was once the almost exclusive preserve of Olympus’ Mju range. But a new contender has stepped into the ring in the shape of Casio’s EX-G1. And the fight is on.
Casio, which has a pedigree in hard-as-nails G-Shock watches, has turned its bash-resistant expertise to digital point-and-shoot cameras.
The hardest Exilim camera to date is waterproof to 10 feet, dustproof, freezeproof to minus 10 degrees and shockproof to seven feet.
And the world’s thinnest extreme digicam wears its muscle on its sleeve with a striking angular design on its 20mm thick housing.
It’s not all brawn and no brain, though. The Norris-esque G1 has a 12.1MP sensor, intelligent autofocus, 3x optical zoom and a 2.5in LCD. It can also shoot movies (at 848×480) and has an Interval Shooting mode for extreme sports action.
You’ll need a microSDHC card to tot up the 35MB internal memory, but once you’ve got somewhere to store your shots, you ought to be able to fire it off 300-odd times on a single charge.
The EX-G1 launches in the States next month for $300 (£180). Expect similar UK availability and pricing.
