Belkin and Netgear have been promising us wireless Skype mobiles since Christmas, and now they’ve been punished for their tardiness – Edge Core has announced that its model will be the first Wi-Fi Skype phone to go on sale in the UK.
The WM4201 is a dead ringer for Netgear’s SPH101 and offers the same cool functionality. Namely, free calls to other Skype users when you’re in a Wi-Fi hotspot.
You’ll also be able to make and take calls from other numbers for a small charge thanks to the SkypeOut and SkypeIn features, and your contacts list will be available once you’ve logged into your account.
It’s not just a shameless Netgear plagiarist either – there’s also a unique optional charger which can apparently act as an internet access point. We’re still confirming exact details with the manufacturer, but it should let you connect to broadband via an Ethernet port rather than relying on finding a wireless network.
Stuff’ll have the UK’s first hands-on with Edge Core’s effort next week, but it won’t have the market to itself for long. Belkin’s phone is slated for a late September launch, and Netgear’s shouldn’t be arriving too much later at the £160 mark. Early adopters, choose your weapon.
