Thanks to almost every single BBC trailer, nature documentary and tear-soaked footy montage of the past two years, Icelandic post-rock four-piece Sigur Rós have gone from reclusive unknown cult figures to (almost) mainstream favourites. With a new album Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust (translation: With a Buzz In Our Ears We Play Endlessly) due at the end of the month, a new track, Gobbledigook, is available to download from their website for nowt.Relying less on the string-laden ‘sonic cathedrals’ that made them number one on every ad exec’s wanted list Gobbledigook’s focus is more on tribal drums and acoustic guitar rhythms. A conscious decision to shrug off the ‘epic’ tag that’s been attached to them since previous album Takk? Possibly, but elsewhere on the album (which is available to stream on the Sigur Rós website too) you’ll find the London Symphony Orchestra and a boy’s choir all playing at once on one track. Look out for it on a Euro 2008 montage, coming to a TV near you very soon.
