LG announces quantum dot LCD TV for CES

What’s the next big trend in televisions? According to LG (and Samsung), it’s “quantum dot” technology. LG has announced its first quantum dot-enabled 4K LCD television, which will debut at the Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas next month. The company promises a wider color palette and enhanced saturation over traditional LCD displays, and this is the official why and how of it:

“The technology works by harnessing nano crystals that range in size from 2 to 10 nanometers. Each dot emits a different color depending on its size,” reads the press release. “By adding a film of quantum dots in front of the LCD backlight, picture color reproduction rate and overall brightness are significantly improved.”

No word yet on critical details like screen size or price, but we should know much more come CES. According to CNET, Samsung also plans to have its own quantum dot sets on display, so it’s sure to be among the most tiring buzz-terms of the show.

GTA Online heists revealed (again)

Cooperative heists were promised a long time ago for Grand Theft Auto Online, the multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V. However, more than a year has passed, the new-gen console version has launched, and still the online heists are MIA. But thanks to a new trailer and extensive interview with IGN, we know they’re still on the horizon, and it sounds like a significant amount of free (and hopefully fantastic) gameplay.

According to the interview, the heists will encompass upwards of 20 hours of content spread across five narrative strands, each with several missions. The four-player events might have you working together as a team, or split apart to accomplish different tasks. Check out the trailer above, and get ready for Heists to arrive sometime in early 2015 on all platforms.

Apple prevails in iTunes lawsuit

iPod Classic

Over the last couple weeks, we’ve heard bits and pieces about Apple’s defense of iTunes in a class action lawsuit filed in the United States nine years ago. In fact, even Steve Jobs testified – via recorded testimony video from before his death. But the courtroom proceedings have concluded, and Apple was found not liable in the suit.

The complaint arose from issues of incompatibility between iTunes and music released on some other services several years ago, but lawyers representing the group (of some 8 million people who bought particular iPods between 2006-2009) struggled to produce viable plaintiffs after all these years.

Ultimately, the jury decided that iTunes 7.0’s security upgrades represented a “genuine product improvement” back in 2006, and no damages were awarded. However, the plaintiff’s group plans to file an appeal, so this could well drag on again for some time to come.

Latest Assassin’s Creed Unity patch released

Assassin

It’s a day later than expected, but the latest big patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity is now live on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and will hit PC later this week. The patch is another significant one, this time replacing and updating large chunks of the Paris city map where players experienced performance issues.

That explains the 6.7GB patch size, but if you’re on Xbox One, there’s a chance that you’ll see a 40GB download instead. Ubisoft says it’s an error that sees the entire game being re-downloaded and installed, and although it requires a lot more bandwidth, the game still works fine when complete. Still, Ubisoft is working with Microsoft to address the issue.
