Small Italian plumbers, start your engines. The lights have gone green on legendary racer Mario Kart for the Nintendo Wii – and this time there’s two-wheeled fun to be had as well.

The latest outing for the podgy plumber and his pals takes advantage of the console’s motion sensitive Wii Remote by bundling a steering wheel housing in every box. If your best finish with the Wii Wheel is a pathetic 12th, don’t fret; you can also use the Nunchuck, Classic Controller or even a retro GameCube pad.

For racers who prefer their vehicles with fewer wheels, Mario Kart Wii is also the first to feature bikes, allowing you to pull wheelies for a sneaky bit of boost.

With 16 new tracks and 16 classic circuits from Mario Kart games of days gone by there’s plenty of single player action to keep you racing, but as any fan knows Mario Kart is all about the multiplayer mode – and the latest incarnation doesn’t disappoint.

Up to four people can play on one console, or if worldwide Wii notoriety is your aim, hop onto a Wi-Fi connection and take on up to 11 others over the net.

Fancy a peek at the gameplay? Then pop back on Wednesday when we’ll have video footage from the game’s launch. As Mario himself would say: ‘let’s-a go!’
