What with MP4 players being two-a-penny these days, and each of them boasting similar specs, the best way to choose a low-end non-Apple player is by looks. And we like the look of this German effort.

The Sharkoon ViViDO MP4 player may not know how to arrange upper and lower case letters, but its Tron-like stylings make it easy to forgive.

The tiny ViViDOs sport a 1.8in screen with a resolution of 160×128, and comes in black, red or blue and in 1, 2 or 4GB. The player uses a touchscreen pad for its controls and supports all the formats you’d expect: JPG, MP3, WMA and AVI (MP4), and ones you wouldn’t: RM, VOB (DVD rips), DAT and RMVB. The players also come packed with in-ear headphones – something other MP4 player makers should be slapping their foreheads at.

You’ll find the ViViDO MP4 players sitting on online shelves for €45 (£30) for 1GB, €55 (£40) for 2GB and €70 (£50) for 4GB, mainly at German digi-music player import sites. But considering Sharkoon has a cult presence here in the UK, they should hit more conventional shop shelves before long. Keep your eyes peeled.
